New Around Town: Mercedes Benz Stadium
The $1.4 billion Mercedes-Benz Stadium is located directly south of the current Georgia Dome

The Braves aren’t the only professional Atlanta sports team getting an upgraded stadium – the Falcons will be moving to the Mercedes-Benz Stadium next season. Project Manager Darden & Company is leading the development of the new stadium, which is replacing the Falcons current home. The Georgia Dome was built in 1992 and is host to many yearly events, including the Peach Bowl and the SEC Championship Game. Though the Dome is only 24 years old, it has already gone through multiple repairs & renovations, the most recent being completed in 2009.

The $1.4 billion Mercedes-Benz Stadium is located directly south of the current Georgia Dome, on the northwest corner of the intersection of Northside Drive and Martin Luther King Boulevard. At 1.9 million square feet, the stadium will be 30 stories high and have 83,000 seats. The huge space and retractable roof allow for a wider range of mega events to be held in Atlanta, including the NCAA Final Four in 2020 and Super Bowl LIII. It will boast an impressive 650 points of sale for concessions.

The Dome will officially be out of commission in March 2017, with Mercedes-Benz Stadium being delivered in June 2017. The current Dome property will be converted into parking space for the new stadium, as well as an 800-room hotel.
